"Sorry folks, you have to upgrade" - utter Rubbish! We don't have to upgrade at all if we're perfectly happy with iOS4.3.3 on a 3GS. Though, to be honest, I'll go Android when my contract expires - to try something new. :-)

So we're talking about a soon to be discontinued hardware being incompatible with a soon to be released software. Stupid! The 3GS wont suddenly stop working when ios5 is out. IOS5 is supposed to be a major revamp of the IOS UI and feature set. It is rumoured to use retina as a minumum resolution on the iPhone and 1024x768 on the iPads. Im delighted that iPhone 4 and the iPads could potentially have a new lease of life with a fresh new OS and UI to be more competitive with the mind blowing Android tabs and phones. Ditching the ancient 3GS support is a small price to pay.

You certainly can, XDA does it all the time, as newer versions of Android doesn't have any particular hardware requirements. You're correct that it doesn't happen that often, though how many 2 year old Android devices are there really? The Android boom only really took off in 2010, we'll know better in a couple of years I suppose. The good news about this? The ridiculous 'fragmentation' argument is dying a slow but certain death.
