thomasg, it seems you don't know anything about certification. It's not about paying something to display something shiny, it's about assuring people that the tech they buy is working properly. Sure, you can skip certification and the hardware will still work, but people who want it will skip your products out of uncertainty. That's all there is to it and AMD wants this to standard instead of a pissx gouda contest.

(darn comment length, this is a lot to sum up), and everything that carries that standard would work together, no matter the vendor. Basically what techno called the ideal solution when he was trying to say how bad AMD's way is and how much better nVIDIA'S way is. But nVIDIA's way gives you no choice of glasses, you have to buy theirs for $200 each, so AMD is already much closer to that ideal solution, and the only one of the two working toward it. And the article title is not wrong, YOU DON'T NEED SHUTTER GLASSES, other types of glasses will work depending on the display. In theory a screen like the 3DS has would work with HD3D, but it only works on very small screens.

So, to sum up: as The_Countess said, you can use any 3DTV with AMD's system, though they guarantee full compatibility with displays from companies they've partnered with, i.e. those that pay to prominently display the AMD HD3D logo on their box. Shutter displys will work best with the active shutter glasses designed for them, though others could be used but the glasses and the display may not sync up right (FTR, this has nothing to do with AMD, their drivers, etc). With polarized displays, you can use any polarized 3D glasses, though again some companies have paid AMD to verify and ensure compatibility. You can even use the $3 ones you get when you see a 3D movie at the theatre. They will eventually have an industry standard for 3D, like 802.11 is for wireless or USB is for data, (...)

Yes, absolutely, in the original article AMD claims their goal is exactly what you said, have an standard, it's known as the "stereo 3D initiative." You seem like you've actually read the article, unlike techno. No offense dude, but the original article contradicts everything you say. It shows a picture of the Sony shutter glasses you can get for Sony TVs in the article!

the whole point of AMD's approach is that you dont need a usb dongle. the TV will know when the next image will come on and relay that to the glasses that they themselves made. hopefully in the future a standard for 3d glasses will be developed and accepted and then you'll be able to mix and match.

The ideal solution to all this would be to have the graphics cards send the appropriate/standardized 3d signal, then monitors come with a standardized usb port and for other 3rd parties to make dongles and glasses which are universal for any active monitor/tv system. Trouble is at the moment that has just not happened. So AMD users are left with almost no options. Even the large HD3D compatible TVs that work with AMD's solution make their own individual dongles which are not cross compatible with other manufactures....its just a real mess, the only system at the momement with any coherent support is Nvidias.

AMD may present the monitor with the appropriate signal but they are leaving the either the monotor/tv makers or another third party to make the dongle and shutter glasses. Thats the problem, although there are several 120Hz monitors out there only one, a viewsonic model, make their own glasses and dongle solution and so is the only one compatible with AMD's solution. The other 120Hz monitors I'm not sure if they themselves even have the ability to interface with the usb dongle as I believe the Nvidia system plugs the dongle into the PC and not the monitor.

if i get the gist of the actual article it seems they are supporting 3d on every hdmi 1.4a 3d monitor from the hd5 series upwards, and working on making 3d available over display port as well (for monitors that support 3d of course) and even dual-link dvi. that will leave you completely free to buy any monitor you want, with any 3d tech you want. as long as its either hdmi 1.4a or display-port. a very admirable goal and the complete opposite of nvidia's attempted hardware lock-in.
