Some people here are only focusing on whether or not the energy saving is going to be minimal or not. I think the best thing about software like this on a sandy bridge platform is that you could utilize the multimedia power of quick sync while converting video files and also be able to enjoy the graphic power of your discrete graphic card when gaming. its a win win if you only buy Nvidia cards. But when you want to be able to use different brands of gpu. say today you find Nvidia option the best, but after 1 year you decide to replace it with an AMD GPU and you still want quick sync to be available the best way to go is with lucid virtu software

It's all in how chose to interpret the numbers. For example, if I use AMD's numbers for my 6950 I'd save about 17W in idle by powering down the card. That might not sound like much but it's about 33% of the total power draw of the computer when idle. While decoding movies the card draws a surprising amount of current, due to the high clocks used. In this case the power savings are closer to 50W, or 50% of the total power draw at that point. It does add up to a lot of power in the end.

wow!!! thats really really dumb!! Every other card runs at lower frequency when not gaming..also even my age old phenom downclocks to 1.2 ghz when i browse etc.. btw..does this come with a bottle opener??

The only real question is if the ultra low poser state is implemented in the GPU and the memory chips... I remember GDDR5 having some differences between the revisions as that older chips didn't have power states and the idle power draw was higher than expected. Also it's not possible to completely power off the discreet graphics which would lead to not so great power savings. On the desktop this is not as useful, probably for some it is, but for most, not really. The power savings might be in the 10W to 20W, which aren't that great.

That is an interesting question indeed. What i really love to see is the IGP. take advantage of all the VRAM on the GPU when the GPU is not in use. Thus freeing up system ram. Tho this is not likely going to happen.

The interesting question here is whether the discrete GPU's frame buffer is copied to the integrated GPU's frame buffer (like Virtu) or vice versa. The former will yield the highest power saving at the cost of lower performance (when the discrete GPU kicks in), while the latter won't save as much power but shouldn't affect the performance of the discrete GPU. Ideally, you would be able to make that choice yourself, but that probably won't happen.

A budy of mine has a MB Pro that does graphic's switching. And it makes quite a impact on battery life. And on system temps. The only real problem is that some programs can crash when switching. Probably not as that would cause problems. The GPU will most likely switch to some ultra low power state or enter some kind of stand buy mode. so that it can quickly be switched to. The GPU will still draw some power but it will be very small.

Actually, you can still get a healthy reduction in power usage by powering down the card fully. In idle as well as doing watching movies etc., especially the latter. Perhaps more importantly though, at least to me, is the fact that my GPU fan is a leafblower even in idle so if I could turn that off my computer would be dead silent.

Does this mean that nvidia is getting out of the video playback game? Most nvidia cards are going to be paired with Intel systems, sort of makes purevideo and all those investments in video quality turn out to be pointless. No doubt this feature has it's power saving advantages, but they are also minimizing their own role. Nvidia is also giving intel credit that they can handle HD. Perhaps nvidia still handles playback, and I am wrong, but that is what I gathered from the article.

Drat! (a word that really needs to come back into circulation!) My desktop's 'computer name' is Synergy, my previous desktops for a long time were called Teletran (with a number suffix). Synergy, apart from the dictionary meaning, is of course the name of the intelligent computer in Jem and the Holograms. And as you all know, both Jem and Transformers (where Teletran comes from) were Hasbro toy lines.
