and it will still work. usb is completely backward compatible. so there is little reason not to do it. and usb2.0 has been a bottleneck for usb drivers and external hard drivers for quite a while already. we need usb3.0 pci-e3.0 is basically a nearly free upgrade, and again 100% backward compatible. and it means cards can use a 1x slot instead of a 4x slot which is cheaper. and ddr3 we need because as computers get more cores they need more memory bandwidth. getting the same bandwidth with ddr2 would be much more expensive as you would need 3 or 4 channels. all this new stuff is far from pointless.

Well you wouldn't want to hit the PCIe 2.0 bandwidth capaticy, release PCIe 3.0 and realise that it has a major problem which ends up in recalls and more research and design, leaving the graphics card industry stuck performance wise for an unknown amount of time

I totally agree Cartman, people should stop expecting technology to move on. Everyone should have been happy with their 386's, their 4MB HDDs and their mono-green CRTs!

Intel created LightPeak now AKA Thunderbolt. They've intentionally delayed USB 3.0 to get their technology in place. THINK people, if that technology gains enough ground AMD will have to pay Intel to have it implemented on our motherboards. Besides, USB works just fine and it's current-gen bandwidth exceeds what devices can deliver.

Back in 2007 USB 3.0 was said to be optical... well, something happened and they dropped the optical part or will add it in the next revision. Based on this http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=185462, it is suggested costs aren't that high for Intel's LP, although they're not open as to how much they really are, but I would expect the next version of USB to be optical as well, probably even less costly and less greedy on the royalties. Add to that the need for only one chip (to rule them all) for optical and copper connectors.

Don't get used to this Drac but my apologies, i was thinking of the LGA-2011 slides. TBH i think that is more shocking, Intel's super high-end, super expensive set doesn't have native USB 3.0. Its not like USB 3 is cutting edge and may or may not be ready at launch date. We are talking about something that has been readily available for over 18 months.

I'm not really wow'd USB 3.0 anymore, I'm more interested in intels light peak technology, being twice as fast and running on optical cable I think we should skip SATA 3.0 and USB 3.0 to make the light peak interface the standard for internal and external devices

Everything i have read about Ivy Bridge has pointed to a lack of USB 3.0, the slides that got 'leaked' a few weeks back said fully SATA-6Gb, PCi-Ex 3.0 but nothing about USB 3.0
