WRT conversation about Brazos & mobos above. I had an ASUS micro-ATX Brazos E350 board (returned it) and have a mini-ITX Sapphire Brazos E350 board (like it very much). In both cases the APU is indeed soldered directly to the board, no socket. As well, the APU package has no heat spreader - just a little glassy rectangle rather like original Athlons did. Given there are only 2 Ontario and 2 Brazos models and nobody cares about the single core models, I'd say there is really no reason to not solder directly to the mobo. And... the Brazos road map does not predict radical increases in performance in future models. I don't see much point in having an upgrade path with this product.

@gamoniac, AMD doesn't... these chips are sold only in BGA packaging, thus they are not available in uPGA and corresponding socket. I was saying that if AMD made Brazos with pins and sockets, thus be able to sell the APU separately, it would not have been that well priced since selling it separately implicates other costs. Having it soldered on the mainboard, the packaging for instance is not needed, there's enough room in the motherboard package to fit the APU and the heatsink. Thus AMD + partners bundled products will have a lower retail price.

very simple - it will list in bios specific numbers to fit Bulldozer, not in full function like in 9xx (HT 3.1) mobo chip-set + SLI on the way, an one more thing BernardP was wright, do not compare a CPU bulldozer chip with an APU (different socket and of course different bridge - Hudson if i remember well)

@Bl0bb3r, I have not taken a very close look, but from what I see, Brazo and Zacate chips are soldered onto the board, probably due to its small die size. That's probably the main reason it's not sold separately. I am not sure if AMD has a retail drop-in socket specs for motherboard makers. Anyone?

@BernardP, well Brazos is a small piece of hardware. Don't know if it's that profitable to ship it separately. I would think that because the partners are getting the chips in large batches they are sold at a lower cost and on top of that it doesn't involve extra packaging, shipping, storage and marketing costs you would see for standalone products. So in the end you get the product much cheaper and the partners don't have to line up tens of mainboard designs which otherwise would also add weight to the total cost of the platform.

So the rumor about Bulldozer shipping before Llano was false... it's very good news that Llano will be available in summer and not early autumn, but I was more interested in BD, this only means they are taking their time on it. Don't know how to rate this one.

Llano has its own socket, something like FT1/FM1 IIRC. Because of the built-in graphics, it's completely different from AM3/AM3+. There are still no news about FT1 socket motherboards coming from Asus and the like. Regarding Brazos, it's still impossible to separately buy a retail mobo and retail APU. Will it ever be? One can only buy a pre-packaged mobo-APU combo.
