Looks like AMD's revenge to NV's GTX 460 that was perhaps the best overclocking video card since umm, well, the moon was blue. It'd be a good way to finish the 40nm round with a good reputation, after bleeding marketshare to GTX 460 buyers for long enough. It is absolutely certain that an unlockable 6790 with 32ROPs and 256-bit bus would trounce both GTX 460 1GB and AMD's own 6850 when unlocked. Damn.

Ofc you can, my 5770 is even fine for FullHD if I dont touch AA for everything besides Crysis and Metro very high...and damn GTA with ENB :/ But a 5830 consumes like a 5870 while the performance is bit over 5770 and even the same with AA. So while the card alone is "good" compared to others its not.

You're a nvidia fanboy but I completely agree with you on this one. The 5830 was a failure: performance slightly above the 5770 and price slightly below the 5850.

Exactly bbo320... most people see the two PEGS and think "OMG! this card must be power hungry". Another reason I think they are using two pegs is for the segment these cards are addressed to. If the cards are cheap they are to be put in cheap computers hence cheap PSU's that won't really match high-end PSU's usually used in setups that have 6800 or 6900 in them. Also, I said this in an older article, the power usage comes from active shaders, and as proof there is the 6950 unlocking case which made the card draw as much power as a 6970. Following this logic a lower active shader count equals to a lower power usage.

It's pretty obvious that the power consumption is due to the HD 6790 being a salvaged HD 6870 since it uses the same circuit board. That's why it has 2 PEG ports. It is also the reason that it will overclock like crazy. If the price is right, this could be a good card.

We can pretty much estimate the power and price already. The TDP of a 6870 and performance lower then a 6850 = a bad card IMO, the only thing that can make it look good is a 100€ price tag.
