"Acer has warned that its PC sales in the first quarter are short of expectations." So you expect people to buy more tablets and phones costing anywhere between 200 and 900 euros, but that will not hurt PC or laptop sales? I'm sorry, but am I the only one who sees something wrong with this picture? Of course with all the new tablets, smart phones and other gadgets people will have less money to spend on PCs and laptops... It's normal, does this mean PC or laptop markets are dieing? Nope. Will their markets continue to decrease? Most likely if more gadgets are being pushed at the incredible prices that they are (of course the prices can be justified).

NP, I should have been more obvious about my own sarcasm :-) The truth is I had to watch for years while the pundits declared the death of the mainframe; now they are silent due to its huge resurgence over the past decade. It will always be the case that new technology diverts spending away from that which is fairly saturated. Nothing really becomes obsolete, the form factors simply adjust and each just finds its best application. But it is true that new tech sucks off the flow of revenue - even more so on commodity tech end of things.

Sorry about that. I was not aware you were being sarcastic. My opinion is that tablets are just toys. I bought an iPad when it came out. and it was cool at first. I quickly lost interest in it.

The blue fox has also a point... in such an economy people can't afford to buy all of them, they pick the cheapest, thinking that a table will do, until they realize it doesn't. @nc_mike, don't worry... just apply sarcasm more often so people get where the message comes from.

Well, it is... it's just like when Notebooks came to the market first time and everybody was in a frenzy to have one. And once they did and realized it's underpowered they flogged them on eBay and got proper notebooks. The thing about cannibalization is that one segment must eat the other for good, not just bite it a bit and then have to throw it out again, which mean losing the market share. Just wait and see how the tablet interest will back down because they lack a lot of the functionality needed for ordinary people, off and on the job.
