Yeah you're right, i just check a few reviews of the GTX 550 Ti on Tech Report and Tech PowerUP and this product is slower than the GTX 460 768mb, pretty underwhelming. I was expecting the 550 to be faster than HD 6850 just like 560 is faster than 6870. Guess nvidia dropped the ball on this one.

GTX 550 Ti reminds me of the 9800GT, nothing really new in terms of performance just a new name.

This card is so worthless. Better buy a 1.5year old HD5770 or even better a HD6850 wich performs better than the 460 1GB for near same price as GTX550. Nvidia is in a constant limbo.

You need to take into account shader complexity. The older cards can't do what the newer ones can, thus the only real difference between generations was speed. But now shaders get more and more functions, they get fat, and will use more transistors to do all those operations, which otherwise woul've increased the number of processing units with limited functionality and this would'ev delivered faster graphics. It's a quality vs quantity issue and I opt for quality.

Clock speeds are just one aspect of the bigger picture. High clocks are always nice, but if it's being hampered by other aspects that make up the overall performance of a component, in this case the limited amount of CUDA cores and 192bit memory interface, it does fat all. I've never seen the point of the cards in this segment of the market. Just another $50-75 more and you get a butt load more performance.

I dont know what to do - to laugh or to cry, when see these gts 550 prices. I mean with next "super-duper" clocked gtx 550 release they will top HD 6950 1GB! is nvidia dumping desktop GPU market?

And since comment space is limited, let me add to my previous. I personally think we're in need of a completely new architecture, on par with the jump Nvidia made with the Geforce 8 series. The shader architecture was a major improvement, but I think we might be maxing out its capabilities. The fact this "new generation" only had a 10~15% improvement over the last gen shows that improvements are slowing down (yes, I realize it's still 40nm). Just to compare, the jump from the Radeon HD 3xxx series to the Radeon HD 4xxx saw more than a 100% improvement.

You say that as if all that matters is the clock speed. This isn't the days of the pentium 4 when it was a contest on who could get the highest GHz. It's the architecture that counts the most.
