@Bl0bb3r Are you telling me you don't think things would move faster if there were 4 or 5 companies leap frogging each other every few months? I understand that progress in the x86 world is much harder as they have come so far already but it seems a little strange how it took AMD to bring out Athlon before Intel dug deep to bring amazing performance with Conroe, AMD brought dual core, Intel followed, AMD brought x64 Intel followed. A company will only work as hard as it has to, that just makes business sense.

@loadwick, you seem to think that only competition drives progress, well what happens when you hit that progress wall that analysts and fortunetellers can't really put on paper or words? You can't just hit 6GHz without any kind of compromise and this compromise mostly will result in a higher price.

@pogsnet Are you sure? It seems pretty unlikely to me that someone who wants to be a threat to the United States would be stopped buy a patent application! Where does this security threat arise from if a non-US company has an x86 licence?

X86 license cannot be just free. It is very important to US for security reasons. Only US company can be allowed to have x86 license. So Dell can buy AMD if it wants to. Many US based company have x86 license before specially in 386-486 era but went to ashes as Intel made secret campaign to erase them so on and so fort.

I truly can not believe people are disagreeing with me. Are you really saying you don't think the rate of development would be faster if there was 5 or 6 equal companies fighting it out? If Apple hadn't of ditched the PowerPC then, from the roadmaps, they would have an 8-core CPU running at +6GHz with the CELL architechture running as an APU. The biggest, most corrupt monopoly in the world is the x86 licence. Someone should step in and make that free to anyone and let the games begin. Hopefully we might see some changes now Windows is on ARM but that will take a long time.

My comments were mostly tongue-in-cheek but my point is valid, the PC industry doesn't have anywhere near enough competition to move at anything other than a snail's pass. Just think if IBM's PowerPC, DEC Alpha, SPARC... were all competing on the desktop front! One thing is for sure we would not have been at 3GHz for 4 years!!

Do you know how many times People have protected the death of the PC? Seams like every year. And guess what there still here. Mobile devices and tablets don't offer the same experience as a desktop. And it's not just me saying this. both Steve Jobs the maker of the iPad, iPhone, iEct. And Bill Gates have said the same thing. And "cloudgaming? The amount of bandwidth it would take. Not to mention the lag.

Come on, PC industry *used* to e exacltly like this the years after nVidia's TNT card.. It's only natural that this kind of development moves to a "hotter" marked which also happens to be fairly immature and theres a lot of room for improvement. The PC market is slowly dying. In a couple of years, only people who produce and develop stuff will feel a need to have a pc/mac.. all regular users will get all they need through their mobile phones and tablets (and "cloudgaming" on your 60" tv at home... /haX

That's not the main reason... one mistake that you made was to compare extremely complex GPU's we have in our desktops with really lousy logic that's in mobile GPU's. Compare a miniature-plastic-toy car with a supercar hybrid, does that seem sound to you? Another mistake was the fact that they're at the beginning of mobile graphics and the limits have not yet been set. It's not that hard to make them faster, while on the desktop things are different, by a huge margin. Do you know the power usage of such GPU's? No, and nor do they. It's not the first time nvidia barked the Tegra-success, only to show failure and delays.
