The 32nm six-cores weren't a surprise at all, everyone knew they were coming. The server parts were known for a very long time and everyone expected intel to bring at least the six-core versions to the desktop. We'll get 32nm 8-cores to replace them towards the end of the year. Quicksynce is nice at all, but it's not that useful. Until and unless more high-end video working products support it, it's just another checkbox. Unless you're really big on converting Blu-rays to something your phone will playback.

Reference Sandy Bridge E, are we 100% sure Intel won't pull a rabbit out of the hat and it will be 22nm? I'm saying this as a bit of extra cache and quad-channel RAM isn't going to add too much to the performance, you can regularly hit 5GHz on the current SBs and for encoding the current chips with QuickSync will be so much faster than the 'high-end' versions! They just seem to be delaying and delaying and i don't really see the reason why. 32nm has been out for ages so that can't be the problem and LGA-1366 has had a very long life already. Why would Intel drag their feet so much? Its really not like them when we are talking high-end chips. Don't forget they 'suprised' us with 32n six-core high-end chips before anything else.

I am not sure i would use the word 'incredible'. All Intel have done is add a new processor at the top and bumped the others down accordingly. It would be increadible if Intel offered a six-core in the $294 slot, but just a slightly higher clocked quad-core isn't exactly special as anyone buying these processors would overclock them anyway so the 920, 930, 950 and now 960 all end up being the same anyway!

Now 960 / 970 are finally competitive. Why did intel cut prices so much? Are they afraid of bulldozer perhaps? :-?
