Yea seems like that + making the low end Athlons x3 bit better for GTA 4 and trying to make a Dual Core somehow decent but thats just a fun thing mostly too Core2Duo time was nice when you could get Extreme Edition performance for ~200€

But how much performance do you really get from OCing anymore anyway? Most "low-end" CPUs (especially on the Intel side) have a stock speed of around 3GHz anyway. It's all about the numbers and "future-proofing" at this point. Of course, even future proofing by OC is useless since it's all about cores and threads now. Dual cores are pointless in the desktop market, and will even be pointless in laptops in a year or two. The only reason to OC these days is to see how far you can go.

Longevity is pretty much a joke with a quad, no matter how good you can oc it. The software that needs a lot power, support and profit from more cores. Other things like gaming/office bore a cheap ass ATHLON II x3/x4. So why getting the current Sandy Bridge cpus ? Besides having nice numbers ofc, 4* 4.4Ghz sounds pretty sweet. When the high end Sandy Bridge chips release there is no question obviously but now ? I dont get it. :/ OC isnt that much of a gamble anymore, all current CPUs easy oc to 3Ghz, most could get to 3.5Ghz without problems too.

Well, if you're just looking to get a high-end CPU at a low-end price, I guess you want AMD, as it has always been. As annoying as it is for consumers, you can't exactly fault Intel for wanting to protect their investment. As for why someone would want to buy a high-end CPU for overclocking, it's either "e-peen" or simply to get the most power and longevity out of the CPU. Don't forget that, with low-end CPUs, you're taking a gamble with your money if you plan to overclock. You might get a huge OC, or you might get next to nothing. If you buy, say, a 2500K, however, you can almost assuredly expect an OC to 4.4GHz or more. It's kind of like buying a 6950 to unlock it to a 6970. You might get what you want, or you might not, where as you will get a 6970 if you simply buy one.

What is the point of buying a expensive cpu and overclock it then ? Wasnt the point of OC to get more of your money aka. buying cheap stuff and oc it, to the level of expensive ? and the e peen ofc.

As reasonable it may seem to you, not everybody can afford a 230+$ CPU + an expensive P67 mobo to enjoy the privileage of overclocking. On previous generations people could OC products from top to bottom, it wasn't a luxury.

The current unlocked SB CPUs (i5-2500K and i7-2600K) are both priced fairly reasonably ($230 and $340, respectively). I've seen them get up to 4.8GHz on air with an after-market cooler, and 4.4GHz with the stock fan. So, over 5GHz should easily be possible with liquid cooling (or maybe even just a really good fan).

5Ghz+?! Really? Haven't seen a Core i5 2300/2400/2500 OCed...ever.ONly high-end unlocked SB OCs to 5Ghz...good for them but it's still expensive.
