A notebook for 600-700 bucks (aka. mid class) can play most games in high details if its got the low 15 inch resolution (that is still higher then 720p from consoles) A console is 200-300 + TV, so mid class notebooks pretty much > consoles, price and power. Desktops are still way cheaper or got much more power ofc. Only for demanding games AND fullHD you have to spend 1k and more. Yes its true that Sony and M$ barely make money with consoles but why does it matter ? Its the end buyer price that does. (at least for the end buyers :D)

In comparison to a console or desktop they still are. Heating and size constraints make them much less powerful due to needing lower clocks. You have to get a very high end laptop just to play a game at reasonable settings and frame-rate. We also have to take into account the fact that the consoles themselves aren't what Microsoft and Sony try to make their money off of. They lower the price as much as they can to build user base and profit off developers buying licenses and selling games. Hell, Sony was loosing money on each console up until not long ago when it moved to a smaller fab size. But PC manufacturers have to make profit on the hardware.

A mid-class notebook is nowhere near as powerful as the PS3 or 360. Notebooks tend to have Intel integrated graphics and a poorly clocked Atom processor or celeron. They are just meant for web surfing and basic text work.

Well, we compare the min req. pc with consoles and the pc isnt much more then 200-300 either. Comparing a high end pc with a console is like comparing a dead slug with a jet, there is no point.

fair? nothing's fair. life isn't fair. if it was i'd be living in a ditch. the consoles use ddr3 and xdr ram. the consoles cost less than £200. a high end pc costs at least £400 - £500. it's all relative anyway. the consoles are actually pretty good at what they do, which is run games. the key word is optimization. it's always been thus. when people first saw donkey kong country on the snes they thought that it was running on early n64 hardware. am2 did wonders with the saturn. gran turismo blew my [censored]ing mind. as did sonic 1. the list is pretty long. GTA 4? may as well smear shit all over my screen.

Well wasnt Nehalem DDR3 only ? I compared console RAM to DDR2 to make it somehow "fair" and i think it should be bit faster or i am wrong ? Its pretty amazing how games can look somehow decent on consoles (specially the exclusives) with such a crappy hardware, wonder if GTA 4 could run maxed out on mid. class notebooks with so much optimisation.

You're right otherwise 123s, but not with this - "though consoles got faster RAM." In Mhz yes, but not in bandwidth. The PS3's 22.4 GBps XDR (which is the fastest of the current gen consoles) was superseded in x86 by Intels Nehalem architecture in 2008. Cell is good for theoretical flops, but gets messeduprealbad by a decent modern x86 cpu in real-world gaming. It's equivalent to a slowish (around 2ghz maybe?) P4. Not all that far from an Atom really, although obviously a hell of a lot more specialised. But a specialised P4 none the less. Although I'll admit this is a bit apples to oranges. The GPU's on the other hand aren't. This is definitely apples to apples and I'm afraid the apples in this case are off. How does that Muse song go? "This war, it can't be won..."

PS3 cpu is a single core with 5 (or 6?)"mini cores", it got nothing to do with a real six core and its a cell cpu anyway, i dont think its faster then a decent c2d. 360 cpu is more of a 3core but again its cell. Then the RAM and installing, you dont have to install games on 360 and the RAM on consoles is very limited, even if you take away around 1gb from pc away (OS, antivirus and other stuff), it still got WAY more, though consoles got faster RAM. So consoles got lesser RAM then an office pc, an old ass, slow GPU that is barely faster then todays onboard chips and a half way decent CPU + no insalling (more work) The req. pc on the other side is pretty decent and could even run Crysis on high in 720p. Something a console never could.
