Even if you're building a different type of aircraft, it would be very beneficial to have someone else's stealth aircraft to look at. The J-20 doesn't look like a fighter, at least not like the F-22 and PAK FA are. It doesn't have the radar to engage other stealth fighters and doesn't have the super-maneuverability . It's probably designed to take out AWACS, tankers, and heavy (non-stealth) bombers at long ranges from it's home base. It's more like a MiG-25/31 and less like an F-15 or Sukhoi Su-27. I don't even know how good it would be as a strike aircraft as it doesn't appear very stealthy from all angles. Even if they deal with the IR signature problems with a new tail section and engines.

Considering how crooked and tightly tied government is to industry I doubt China will even be able to put it into production. This project is more likely a way to funnel money from the government directly into the pockets of some officials and generals. This plane will not see sustained production.

Sometimes I wish the Cold War was still on. If it was, the US and the USSR would probably have deployed the F-22 and a PAK FA aircraft 15 years ago. I mean, the F-22 first flew in 1990. I'd guess the Soviets would have been at least a few years behind at minimum, the US had a big edge in technology in this area. I'd also guess by now they'd be looking into their replacements. The Cold War might have been a massive misunderstandin g and huge waste of money, but goddamn if it didn't produce some really slick weaponry. We'll be using weaponry developed towards the end of the Cold War until the middle of the 21st Century. Hell, some of the stuff that will be flying in 2040 will have been designed in the early 1950s (B-52, Bear).

Oh noes, the Chinese have access to 1970s US stealth technology. The defense guys don't seem to be awfully impressed with the J20. it's certainly no Raptor or PAK FA. I don't know a whole lot about the Russian fighter, but I do know something of the Raptor. It's a much stealthier design, it has very advanced radar, it has a very advanced sensor suite and data processing equipment, it's armed with very accurate AMRAAM (soon do get a big range boost with the -D model), and it has thrust vectoring. The Chinese jet is lacking vectored thrust, is only stealthy to radar from the from, doesn't have anything in the way of IR stealth, and it (apparently) lacks the sensor suits of the F-22 and F-35. It's a fourth-gen jet with a fifth-gen wrapper.
