LOL. Apple out of the phone business in two years? They control 20 to 25% of the smartphone market with a single model. They're not going anywhere. That said, I really wish Google would bring it's phones to Verizon. I probably would have gone with the Nexus S had it been on the best network in the States. They made the same decision with the Nexus One and told Verizon subscribers to buy the HTC Droid Incredible, an inferior phone. If my Droid X doesn't get a 2.3 update. I may just pay full price for a new phone in the summer. Maybe another Android phone, maybe an iPhone 5. I think maybe Apple should, not that they will, have a higher-end model. 3.7" isn't big enough anymore, a 4.3" iPhone would be nice.

BS line about too many updates, I have had a half dozen updates on my two iPhones, one for my HTC and only the 2.0->2.1 for my Moto (leaving it without WiFi tethering). Updates are no longer optional like the old Micro$oft policy of buy a new phone to get a new OS. If the OEMs can't understand this, Google needs to start selling more Nexus again, and make OEMs realize they're gonna play ball or else. Microsoft isn't about to stop updating their woefully lacking hardware either as they try to re-enter the market. If the OEMs try to continue this st00pid policy they might as well give their sales to Apple, who while restrictive, at least aren't afraid of updates. I would've said Apple is out of phones in 2 years, actions like this guarantee their place.

Holding updates back isn't as bad as what Motorola is doing. I was sold a Motorola Dext in Australia and was told it was getting a 2.1 update, months past and although it had been indicated to be updated during Q4 2010, it eventually changed to "Will remain on Android 1.5". The worst thing, the US version of this phone (Motorola Cliq) still got an update to 2.1 Think they're completely different phones, then look at the Motorola Backflip. US got 2.1, everywhere else didn't. And frankly, Motorola as far as I've seen haven't explained why this is. Link (I don't know if they're allowed or not sorry) to the upgrade status page: https://supportforums.motorola.com/community/manager/softwareupgrades

What about enterprise? If you're going to use something in enterprise, you want everything patched up and updated as soon as possible. Right now, Android certainly isn't that.

Some people just doesn't realize that Android devices are made by "many" companies. Most of the phone came with customize skin and driver so updated them will require the company to cooperate with both Google and carrier alike (not to mention hardware supplier). Also, some people expected their Pentium 3 machine to run Windows 7 which is impossible (you should see a psychologist immediately to evaluate your reasoning skill).

Well i am using Gingerbread 2.3.1 on my Galaxy S, custom rom. At least the boot loader is not locked. I think the problem with Samsung with their American Phones is they are all capacitive touch keys. They can't be used intill they boot up. Meaning if a problem happens during an update your phone is bricked with no recovery at all. People would complain alot more if they have to take them in to service with loss of all data yes?

Of course it's fragmenting, Android is based on Linux. By design Linux based systems are supposed to be unwieldy and non standard. Linux doesn't permit using binaries that aren't made specifically for the system you are using. What did they expect would happen?

Part of the problem is no doubt the US situation with carrier lock-ins etc. Both Samsung and SE, who've taken a lot of flack for their lack of timely updates, had updates out in Europe quite some time earlier. Anyway this impacting the platform as a whole is FUD at best. People posting on tech blogs, myself included, are tech geeks and always want the latest stuff yesterday but the majority of users don't care. The handsets that sell the most volume, cue HTC WildFire/SE X8/ZTE Orange etc., do so because they're cheap and accessible. The owners of said handsets often aren't even aware of what version of the OS they're running. And why should they, as long as their services work?
