I understand there are DRM free games, they're not big titles. I also realize that most DRM schemes don't work. I've ripped 150 BDs and well over 300 DVDs.

So, let's recap: Warrior is a successful troll. Almost everyone here is either a hardcore console fanboy or a hardcore PC fanboy. 123s doesn't know the definitions of the words "steal," "rental," and "license," and he doesn't understand how pointless whining about DRM is. He also seems to be OCD about the software on his computer and is obviously a pirate. Naterm doesn't realize that there are plenty of DRM-free games, that most DRMs don't work because they causepeople to pirate to get around them, and that rewarding people for buying legit (which Steam tries to do) would work much better. Finally, this is getting boring. Where's Warrior? He makes things much more entertaining.

So how does it hurt ? If you steal the box, the box isnt there. If you load, its still there + its not like pirates load from the official site, so no traffic either. You could download the same game 100000 times, it still wouldnt hurt anybody who made it. If you steal it in store, there is obvious damage.

Hurt because the box isn't there? What? You're not paying for the box, or the manual, or the disc (although they do add to the final cost). What you're paying for is the intellectual property contained within. It doesn't matter if you lift it from a store or lift it from Rapidshare, you're still stealing IP.

Yes, i agree with you. My point was that an illegal download ITSELF doesnt harm anybody. (stealing the box in a store would hurt because the box is not here anymore, so its direct damage) Adding factors that the person would possible buy the game, etc, etc then it does hurt ofc, though nobody knows how much, so its pure speculation.

"Digital theft' as you call it, does indeed harm the company that makes it and you are stealing something; intellectual property. While organizations like the BSA or RIAA incorrectly equate each instance of piracy with a lost sale, there definitely is a lost sale at some point. Maybe it's a ratio of every ten downloads they loose a sale, probably more. However, the fact is, they are loosing sales and loosing money. This means they don't get the ROI that they might have otherwise received from sales and have less to put into further development. Because it's definitely not going to come out of executive salaries.

Its true that if youre lucky steam prices are great but usually they arent. You have to wait and hope that the game YOU want gets cheaper... With all the 5-7h games today, its just a waste to spend 40-50 bucks for it and Steam takes the renting or buy > resell option. The problem is that its forced too, I dont mind xfire because i choose to install it, if you buy a steam game (normal box) then a freaking publisher tells you what to install on your pc...that sucks. At least you dont compare it to a theft in store but still. By "stealing" software, you didnt take anything and did no damage to the victim. Digital theft explains it better, i guess.

Oh, because the used PC game market is so important. I've never, ever been to a store that sold used PC games. Maybe on fleabay or something. So what if you can't resell them? There are many times on Steam where you will pay far less than retail for even newer titles. How many brick and mortar places do you think sold Bad Company 2 for $10 before Christmas? Obtaining software you didn't pay for and wasn't a gift is stealing. It's not the same as walking into a store and lifting something, but it is stealing. It's a black and white issue. I don't see how people work it out in their minds that is anything besides theft.

@Naterm You cant resell them (without selling acc) so its pretty much like renting, just for longer time... as for DRM, Steam being effective ? It pretty much annoys me as paying customer (and a lot people too) and pirates get their steam games without this annyoing spyware. Had to load the games i own already just to play them decently, yay to steam. I had a lot issues with them, some dll file missing or some particular file doesnt work, sometimes 1 game couldnt install while others could, etc, etc. Sure, software can have problems and bugs but if its forced stuff like steam, this problems are double annoying. Agree with rest besides piracy being stealing. I trust you can explain why its stealing better then warrior, so have a try :D
