			<description><![CDATA[But even if there is a standard for everyone to conform to where your discrete card turns off when not needed and the on-die GPU takes over, which is probably 90% of the time for most users, i don't see it being that much of an improvement. I have no idea what the idle power usage for on-die GPUs is but AMD have got theirs down to less than 20w and by the time i buy they will be on 28nm and probably at half that again. I just think like Bulldozer, Intel should have left some of this new Sandy Bridge range GPU free so that people have the choice of whether they need or want a hot GPU reducing their overclock and not helping them play games or reduce their power bill.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[Hopefully Bulldozer will give some competition on the performance front rather than just the current mid-range bang-per-buck front for some cheaper high-end chips. I will probably end up waiting for Intel's high-end LGA-2011, unless SB is a massive step up and overclocks like a dream as some are saying, 5GHz on air sounds nice (unlocked editions of course!). Until graphics cards can be properly shut down, no matter what your set up, then on-die GPUs for me are just a waste of silicon and producer of unwanted extra heat. I can see on-die graphics have their place in the market: low end, HTPC, business PCs but they are never going to be able to play game, proper games at high resolutions and settings so for anyone that will play games a discrete card will always be needed.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[That would be fine if PCs weren't such terrible Blu-Ray players. The software you need for Blu-Ray playback on a PC is pretty awful. Also, the last time I checked you couldn't stream .iso files over a LAN so you'd either have to transfer them from the server to the client for playback or setup a SAN. @loadwick Intel's fixed function hardware in Sandy Bridge seems to be very, very fast. I'll have to wait to see what software supports it and how good it actually is, but it is fairly exciting and another good reason to buy the chip.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[@korben43 I do it so i can put them on my phone so need to transcode. @Naterm The quality totally depends on the how well the software uses the GPU. ATi's Avivo isn't too bad but using my 4870 doesn't seem to improve performance much as instead of having 4 x 3.8GHz cores running at 100% they run at ~20% and ~5% GPU load! Expresso using ATi Stream is poor but using Cuda problems aren’t visible under normal viewing. If you freeze a panning frame and get down to the pixel level then you might see a difference. But going from 6 hours to under an hour i can live with that. I wonder if Intel's 'Transcode Accelerator' will produce the same problems as other GPU accelerated transcoding. I'm not sure how Intel's works.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[Why not just rip a Blu Ray into ISO format? You lose no video/audio quality that way. Storage is cheap these days and setting up a file server with enough storage is the way to go.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[I use the following: Haali Media Splitter Graphedit MKVtoolnix AVIsynth mkvmerge eac3to HDBRstreamextra ctor x264 AnyDVD HD Arcsoft Total Media Theater It's fairly sad that years after the release of the format that BD ripping hasn't become a more streamlined process. Especially if you want lossless audio. I haven't messed around with the consumer GPU video encoding solutions. From what I've heard the quality isn't very good at all. I'm not going to trade image quality for speed.]]></description>

I used to use Nero Recode for most of my transcoding as their output, IMO, seems to be as good as any other but they don't support blu-rays so i have been using Handbreak and Cyberlink Expresso. Quality is a touch better with HB and using my AMD quad core @3.8GHz HB takes between 4-6 hours for a full length film with ever setting up to max quality, 2 pass. Expresso is much quicker and not a lot worse but add in a CUDA GPU and you are truly looking at 5x the speed, eg less than an hour. Not sure SB will better that.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[The performance delta between an SNB and a Kentsfield will probably be at least 30% clock for clock. That's a big difference if you're actually using your CPU for something intensive (ie, not gaming). I'll get a substantial performance increase when transcoding high bitrate AVC/VC-1 video streams. That's not even taking into consideration any AVX enhancements that come into effect down the line.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[It's because when you crank up the resolution and effects the CPU performance becomes less and less relevant. It then becomes about the GPU. This is why games have long ago stopped being a good test of CPU performance. If there is anyone who doesn't 'get it', it's you.]]></description>
