@Nerd if you are talking about GTX580 which is suppose to be GTX480 which many cores are disabled from the start. HD 6900 series is completely different from 6800 series in architecture, so there is no disabling between the two unless you compare 6950 with 6970.

i can't believe you're all so concerned and quick to argue over power consumption. who cares. high end cards take a lot of power. too much speculation. just wait till the damn thing comes out. hopefully the delay was to get it a little closer to 580 otherwise it's gonna be a wash. except for you guys concerned with tdp and not fps.

I believe that Fuad wrote this piece because it's normal for him to see his beloved "green-team" disabling features to remain in spec and renaming chips more often than you changing your underwear. So, I guess he expects the same from AMD. Am I right Fuad? :P

The last time they disabled shaders in the highest end product (that I know of) was the 4870. The 4870 actually had 900 SPU's, but 100 were disabled (used as backup). I doubt it's the case now because the model before the 6970 (6950) will get rid of defective 6970's.

There is no real marketing tool as you can measure the power by yourself moron. :P As for the addition of the power tune there should be a serious reason (eg limit the power when playing old games to 80W) because it neads special components and increases final product cost.

Think of PowerTune Maximum Power like Furmark's power test... it's not a realistic usage, but how much the card will draw under the most excessive of conditions. A thing that pointed out nvidia's TDP isn't exactly right on spot with what the PR guys tell us. The Typical Gaming Power is the rating most people will have to plan for when buying a PSU, or upgrading the card... and that should be enough. Give that TDP is a thermal value, not a power consumption value, it is only useful in finding out which heatsink is appropriate. Not that useful if power is throttled by some controller, which makes the TDP value unreliable.
