Wow five platters! Geez that thing will probably run really hot for a HD, I hope they catch up on platter density. At the same time I'm glad that there's finally a second 3TB out as that will help start to bring the prices down even further.

I have 3 1TB Hitachi drives and 1 2TB drive. The 1TB drives are now 3 years old and they all work flawlessly, as does the 2TB. I'm not sure about where you've heard of all these problems but I've not experienced any and so I'll continue to buy Hitachi. Perhaps you speak of the deskstar back from when IBM ran the show. Well, its changed since then.

Maybe the lack of official announcement is because of possible backlash over high rate of failure of hitachi drives. Just adding more platters to their 7k2000 series likely further increases the chance to fail of these already unreliable drives by another 50%. Combined with people having problems actually using the drives, someone might have to think of a name worse than deathstar.

24000yen or so in Akihabara. I didn't buy any, but 2T's are coming down in price now. If this had been anything like Hitachi displays, they want you to sign an NDA before you can get the user manual. They lost those sales to SHARP. Which was a real shame as the SHARP displays are better, cheaper and easier to use. ^_^!
