The x800 series also had a number of SE/LE versions as well. It was rather entertaining how people were unlocking them for the few that did work.

Although this statement is true, you have to consider they need some time to mass up these 'bad' chips so they can have a batch big enough to sell. Just like 4830/4860s, they came out only slightly before EOL of 4800 series, because the yields are so good, even the 4850 had full 800sp. They only had enough 'bad' chips(640sp) near the end. In short, that means 460's yields are pretty good, there are simply not enough bad chips to sell at the beginning.

Supercrit's idea of masking the SE portion of the name is seriously the only problem with this card. Does anyone honestly see a problem with nVidia finding a way to sell more fermi chips by lowering the core requirements, assuming that the performance is similar to the 768mb version with the help of the wider bus? More revenue for ol' green means more competition in the market. And as for the assumption that this is a move based on poor gf104 yields, the fact that most retail models are clocked HIGHER than factory argues soundly against that. Fab processes are not subject to entropy. They get BETTER with time.

The sellers could omit the SE and calls it GTX 460 1GB 256bit, unsuspected buyers could fall into this trap. They should name it GTS 460 or GT 460, or even GTX/GTS 455 7600GT/7600GS 1800XT/1800GTO, you can't really omit anything.

The 8 series, the 7 series, the 6 series ALL had SE/LE versions at one point or another(8 series were called GS/O). I believe ATI even had some LE/SE versions. In fact I definitely recall an ATI 9800 with slower memory and even less pipes than the full blown 9800. Then there was the X1800GTO, So whats new about this?

The 460 SE clearly shows that nvidia has poor / lower than expected yields even with GF104. The SE version is only 75% enabled. How will they make a 384 sp card with higher clocks priced similarly with 460 1GB to compete with 6870?
