Oh really? Back in about 2004 the #7 machine in the Top500 was built with Xserves. A not insignificant number of media and research shops use the Xserver/XSAN combination. A lot of popular TV shows are produced with that combination and they're going to have a hard time either going to Mac Pro servers or Windows/Linux/Unix servers. Apple is putting a lot of customers in the lurch here. It's no wonder enterprise looks upon them with disdain.

Goodbye Xserve, you will not be missed. I only know one company that ever used these and it is an "Internet TV channel", although all the editing is done by the individual shows - they just use those machines to produce different resolutions and formats, and I never worked out why they didn't just use ffmpeg on Linux for that. As for the latest update, if they are using 32nm 6-core Gulftown Xeons, they must have been updated fairly recently. Those barely work in any 1366 workstation/server motherboards.

Almost every Apple article you write is inaccurate. Apple last updated the Xserve sometime in 2009...probably about a year and half ago. I'd guess somewhere between March and June when the Xeon 55xx sequence processors first launched. Q2 2009 is a big difference from Q4 2007. On one hand I can see why Apple is dropping it, something like this (running one OS install no less) is definitely over kill for serving a few Mac Pros in the art department.
