It's nice to see that Nvidia has improved upon the GTX 480 silicon, the GTX 580 is what Fermi was meant to be and we'll see how well it performs. I think AMD/ATI has had more time to tweak their silicon and I expect to see the HD 6970 outperform anything Nvidia has to offer, this is coming from someone who has always purchased and preferred Nvidia graphics cards 7800GTX/8800GTX and now GTX 480! I'm not sure if this makes me a fanboy for Nvidia products or not, but I call it how it is and if AMD comes up ahead then kudos to you AMD! I have to give credit where credits do, the AMD HD 5970 (dual GPU card) still takes top place for a single graphics card that looks to trail the GTX 580 in some games. No BS here!

Huh? This is what I call an AMD fanboy. How do you know which will end up faster or better, do you have both cards and test it home? It an overall increase of 15% over the GTX 480 and 45% over the 5870, its actually 2x faster than a 5870 in Tesselation applications like Heaven and stone giant. Anyways we'll see which card ends up faster, all I'm hoping for is that we'll see reduced prices for us the consumers. So leave the stupid fanboism aside and buy the better product.

I'd be very happy if this is nothing more than a fixed GF100 with the same specs and capabilities of GF100. Gaming does not really need big increases in GPU power until 3820x2400 LCD monitors are the standard. AMD and NV are competing in gaming in terms of rendering the edges of scene items that just don't matter that much to game play. Good games are good because they have good enough graphics but superior game play. Honestly, does anamorphic anti-aliasing (or buzz word du jour) make your game better? Not really. GF100, on it's original published specs, would have been a GPGPU monster, top of class. Today, a fixed GF100 would still be a GPGPU monster and still top of class, but affordable!

The consumer version of GTX 480 has capped its DP at 1/8 as opposed to 1/2 in hardware, and consumers don't use it in games, CUDA, or compute whatsoever. By cutting this down on hardware level, the GTX 580, will be smaller and cooler and the additional space and wattage can be used for adding units for gaming performance such as additional 64 texture units. This update from Fudzilla tells us that not only will the performance be up, but chip size and power consumption is going down. It's win-win situation.

maybe now the fricken nvidia fanboys can stop with the ati/amd 6800 rename. At least Amd have made better improvments vs this 480 to 580 rip off. I seriously hope the 6970 puts this 580 POS rip off in its place.

580 huh??? a whole new series for a very little tweaked card.......wow, you see this is why I left nvidia. After the 8800gt came out Nvidia has just been rebranding cards, and I see that Nvidia is going to continue goign around scewing over the customer.. It should be nvidia "the way its ment to be screwed."

Interesting, at least I am glad to see NVIDIA has a card to counteract ATI right away, since that only means that prices will go down. Although, it is funny to see how this site does not go off on the naming of this board. Since Fudzilla spent weeks bitching and moaning about AMD's new naming scheme, and this GTX 580 is even less of a tweak than the jump from the 5000 to the 6000 arch was for AMD. Also, Fudzilla... if you're going to literally copy and paste other people's articles, either use quotation marks or provide proper citation/references. It just looks sloppy, and the obvious paid for NVIDIA trolls aren't helping either. Cheers.

LOL, well we all knew (apart from Fuad) that nVidia simply could not have made anything new in such a short time. The GTX-580 is a laughable excuse for a Next Generation card! They haven't added any new features and have actually taken things away like GPGPU DP. My only hope is that nVidia have been able to solve the yeild issues it had with the 480. Only then can it truly compete with the 6970 by starting a price war, fingers crossed!
