Agreed. SSD is the future for Boot drives. Now if they'll just get around to supporting TRIM for RAID configs I'll be a happy camper.... I thought I read somewhere that they were working on an alloy or some such that could replace the need for Platinum for HAMR. I could be mistaken though. PS.... I WOULD trade my car for a pair of video cards.... ;)

@Alereon, considering that SSD's will become the new boot drives and HDD will be used mainly for storage it won't mater that much. Anyway, it's nice to see the industry moving forward @nele, nice info, however HAMR needs platinum to work... I wouldn't want to trade my house for a 300TB HAMR HDD.

Also keep in mind that you need a motherboard using UEFI along with Windows Vista/7 64-bit in order to boot from one of these monster drives. Boards still using a BIOS and older/32-bit versions of Windows need not apply.

That's probably not going to happen. For one thing, your comparison is poor. I'm thinking we had 750GB drives at the end of 2006. So the capacity increase is 4x not 8x. Also, PMR is fast running out of steam and platters are going to have to move to HAMR or BPM. Shingle writing can be used as an interim fix to boost areal density, but it's only good for bulk storage drives that don't see a lot of writes. That's not even taking into consideration all the legacy problems with partitions over 2TB in size.

SATA 6gbps is NOT a selling point on ANY mechanical drive, considering they can't saturate SATA 3gbps. This is purely a check box for marketing, considering it's a 'performance' grade product. (I know 'burst' speeds may temporarily be higher, but I severely doubt that would make any noticeable difference. At all.)
