I don't know where this is coming from. I just stated (because someone mentioned it) that pushing an HD 5870 over 300W would be very hard, and this just proves that it is since in this test, the 5870 is well below the GTX 480, which itself draws about 300W. I also said that it would be possible. Maybe LN2 isn't necessary after all, but this Gigabyte card had to have pretty high voltage settings.

Who said anything about it being bad? Any inference would be your own intepretation since I presently use (and am reasonably happy with)Crossfired HD 5870's myself. My answer was in reply to Alexko's assertion that an HD 5870 wouldn't draw 300w unless under LN2. By his own link he has shown that a stock GTX480 can draw ~320w. I simply illustrated how an aircooled OC'ed 5870 can chew through 96% of that figure via Kyle Bennett's review.

Maybe I am missing something, so an OC'ed 5870 can overtake a GTX480 while consuming less power and costing $100 less. And that is "bad," how exactly?

So...how does the fact that the GTX 480 is a power sucking monster demonstrate that the HD 5870 OC'ed isn't ? Is the power usage of one somehow dependant upon the usage of the other ? HD 5870OC 507 watts, GTX 480 528 watts. Performance roughly equal, and a 4% difference in system power usage... Another nvidia article, another carpet bombing. Keep up the good work, it's kneejerk bs posts like yours that keep the fanboy wars alive and kicking. I'm sure Fudo appreciates the extra page views.

"At full-load though the GIGABYTE HD 5870 SOC Edition is still much lower than the GeForce GTX 480. The GeForce GTX 480 eats the most power, and it only performs on par at best with the GIGABYTE HD 5870 SOC Edition. When overclocked with voltage modification the wattage increases, but it still isn’t as much as the GeForce GTX 480 is at its default speeds. Clearly if power is your concern, a standard Radeon HD 5870 is your best option." So err… what?

Alex can I have "Poorly thought through/ generic fanboy forum responses" for $200 please An OC'ed HD5870 on air can easily pull 300+W....Here's what system usage looks like with a reasonable OC: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/06/14/gigabyte_hd_5870_super_overclock_edition_review/9 Maybe [H] should "overclock to hell" and run Furmark!
