while true, (and short lived as you pointed out.) this is just from the point of the consumer. looking at it from nvidia's point of view, ALL GF10x chips are larger and therefore more expensive to make then comparable ATI chips. if nvidia still has its normal ~3 month lead it use to have on ATI this wouldn't be a problem. but now that they are grossly behind (atleast 9 monts) they just can't afford to have larger chips at the same price point. not if that is going to be happening for a few generations anyway.

Why is it not competitive because it came out in July? People compare these cards on game performance and price, not the launch date. It is true that soon AMD will have new cards out and they may be a better deal than the GTX 460. When the GTX 460 came out, almost everyone was recommending them for someone looking for a card in the $200 price range. It was not only competitive, but the bang 4 the buck leader (in that price class) since the day it came out and still is today.

I'd call it a tie. The GF106 is not a bad chip, it's a bit more power hungry than AMD's parts, but as you've pointed out it's got Physx and better SLI scaling (tessellation should be better too). Personally, I'd go for the AMD, since I really don't care about SLI or physics. If it had launched 6 months ago it would have been competitive, but now it's just too late. I don't expect the GF108 to do any better. In fact, it will be followed by new AMD entry-level parts in matter of weeks.

Actually this is not very accurate. The 450 matches the 5770 in performance but consumes a bit more power so its a tie(if you consider the time delay 450 is a failure). On the other hand 460 is on par with 5850 (now with the improved drivers) consumes a little bit (~5%) more power(not important) but it has ~10% better scalling at sli and physx support. Plus it is somewhat cheaper (if you consider the time delay 460 not a win but a tie). So Nvidia didn't even fully catch up with Amd (450 case). Now Ati will release next gen cards so probably Nvidia will be on the same situation as last year(embarrassi ng)
