No, most generic cards are all contracted through another company, whether it's MSI, Foxconn, or Flextronics. nVIDIA claims to make their own Quadro boards for direct sales to OEM's like Dell and HP, and they support all Quadros directly. So adding a small amount of retail sales' tech support to the Quadro support team wouldn't cost much. Best Buy has their ways of getting exclusives, whether for movie releases, or launch day deals, etc. Maybe nVIDIA was forced into it with some BFG deal that they had with Best Buy.

Yet another reason I am glad to have a Microcenter near by. Also, I doubt that Nvidia makes these as a manufacturing facility isn't cheap. If so, I wonder who they farm out the manufacturing to.

It's a 'delay the inevitable' tactic that will cost them a little later. Partners are already being screwed by various means like the 400 seres GPUs + old junk mandatory offer. Eventually, the partners will start to punish nV back.

It is not uncommon for this to happen. From what I understand, most of the "ATI" with no OEM cards are for promotional purposes, reviews, contests, demonstrations, etc. Obviously they make more than they need for these purposes and sell inventory they have on hand. I have an HD4890 that is ATI only that came factory overclocked that I won from a contest last December. I'm hoping the HD6000 series will be a big enough leap for me to upgrade. 8)

NVIDIA is already battling AMD and INtel, now they would most probably antagonize their exclusive partners.. Are we gonna see NVIDIA vs. THE WORLD?

JAY_III is right. That is one of the main reasons 3dfx went down. Not very competitive chips, focused on much different things than industry's needs and pissing off partners by having their own line.OK as a voodoo fanboy I really like that, but that's not a good move by any means... P.S. Remember AALCHEMY ???

one has to wonder what particular set of reasons drove them to this. This is probably the most interesting piece of news I've heard as it begs the most questions about what is really going on at Nvidia HQ. Is this the beginning, are they pulling away from AIB's or is it a band aid to their shrinking "Margins". It really poses a lot of questions about the future of Nvidia. It really sounds like the beginning of putting down the AIBs in order to achieve a higher profit margin so as to be more competitive with ATI/AMD. hmmm really interesting.

Until we know the price we cannot predict the effect. If the price is lower than a channel partner would offer a similarly built unit, then the channel will definately be pissed. Nvidia would only do this because they know they have nothing to compete with in the mainstream area price wise compared to ATI/AMD. Board partner will start to quickly make plans, if they haven't already to move away from a solely Nvidia product portfolio. If the price is the same or higher then they will still be pissed, but not as much. Nvidia would do this to increase there margins as they would get the profits that the board makers would normally get too. This is also an indication that they are hard pressed by ATI/AMD, but it might be survivable by them. It's a poor decision, either way.

Yeah, NVIDIA partners must "not mind" they just got bypassed into one of the largest electronics retailers/channels in the US. I mean, it is not like the goal of capitalism is to make profit or anything, apparently it must be to cater to online fanbois exclusively.
