@FnuGk, @JAB HPC == High Performance Computing. As for larrabee... If you need to do a lot of math very quickly you either buy a lot of CPU from Intel or AMD, or you buy some GPUs from NV or AMD. GPUs basically do math with high degree of parallelism. ~5 years ago people realized GPUs, dollar for dollar, are better at computing math than CPUs. Nvidia especially backed this trend with it's CUDA scheme. Intel, seeing a real threat to CPU sales in GPUs, needed something with which to answer the GPU. Thus Larrabee. Not intended to be a GPU per se, it just had to match GPUs in the above-described market. It has many x86 cores because Intel knows x86, and in truth CUDA is not easy to program well, but x86 is well understood.

I think the problem for Intel is that they don't want to approach a GPU as a GPU though as a CPU. 50 cores? Are we talking shaders? I don't think we are...can't even really stick to the basic terminology. While it would technically be nice to have a third GPU producer enter the market and bring prices down Intel is a monopolist that wants to jack the prices up and screw over consumers so if anything it's more of a "meh" if they succeed. Ultimately I see Intel eying to put Nvidia in a world of hurt by reducing dedicated GPU market by integrating mid-range GPU in to the CPU like AMD is. What it comes down to is if Nvidia can remain in business through APU era otherwise we'll be looking at Intel versus AMD for GPU's later this decade.
