I'm gonna stop you there a sec. AMD is not permanently in second place. If you remember back, Intel held down AMD for a long time until they got the right product and shoved Intel in the glove compartment for many years. ATI also ran second fiddle to Nvidia for 75% of their entire existence. In this game, second place is never permanent. Why do you think Intel brought out their cheap ass hyper threading maneuver again? AMD was coming back and they needed an ace in the whole to stay ahead of them. Things change my friends.

I always considered ATI a premium brand. I have readily bought ATI cards. I always considered AMD to be a budget inferior brand, and I generally avoid their cpu's. So, it's ditch Audi for GM. R-i-g-h-t.

I would have thought a better idea would have been to brand AMD to on-board graphics solutions and leave ATi to the add-in cards. That at least gives a clear cut difference.

FUD_U, you said it..to me, its amd wanting to say 'we make this'. they don't realise that many people though knowing ati is owned by amd, don't see radeons as being developed BY amd. Reason, they don't equate the power of a radeon in the same light as amd's phenom chips. or better still, amd cpu's don't match the prestige of a ati's radeon. You put AMD name on radeon card and see what happens. IF the next gen has amd name on card and that card gets a serious whoop ass by nvidia (and i believe such a card will come), whoooooo. some peeps could say,'well it's a amd part afterall'. if same said card retain the ati name, the storm can be ridden nicely, just cause of that ati name.

I don't know what to say really. I've been buying ATI card every year and I've grown to be loyal with the brand. This is like someone telling me like it or leave it. Changing Brand during a hot season is a bad bad idea. I'm not a marketing expert but in a business world, when something is gaining momentum, you don't change it. Absolute worst decision ever!

So we'll see what'll happen a year or two down the line, from the brand name cull.. I'm sure there are Intel fanboys who buy ATI cards cause it HASN'T got AMD name on it.They can 'pretend' its not a AMD part hehe.I can see where they come from,as i'd NEVER have no intel parts in my AMD rig, branded especially. Anyway,if it back fires then 'we-who-care-about-ati' will tell AMD that they've continued to not steer far from the 'don't-know-s**t-but-we-kinda-guessing' the market' path. If not, the 'we-don't-care-about-the-ati-name' brigade will pat us on the back and say, "seeeee. Nothing to worry about'. If they're right,i'll accept it. but i've little uneasiness about the move. my rant's done..oh, it's a fun rant btw..

I agree with others. The ATI name should stay with the enthusiast aimed card segment, at least. e.g.,BMW own and manufacture Rolls Royce, right. You don't see them EVER killing that well known brand name, then sticking theirs on the product? No siree..It ain't happening. They KNOW what that brand name means.BMW are an highly reputable company that create very high quality products. But even they will back off and leave the 'accolade' light to still shine on Rolls royce..AMD to ATI? Sorry, but don't.

ATI was developing to be a Strong Brand. Simple, easy to remember, Shocking, One of the kind design. Like Coca-Cola. They are definitely throwing away they COCA-COLA Brand and are going to try to sell PEPSI. Of course i'll still buy it. I know how good the GPUS are. I use to hate ati. You know.... i liked Nvidia. NOw i love it and it's being taken away. ATI and AMD are two different Brands and man if i were AMD i wouldn't mix things up like that. Enjoy the next GPUS they'll still be good.
