MSI, Gigabyte and ASUS are big guns, OEM's that manufacture hardware (laptops, desktops etc.) for brand name companies as well producing their own brand. They are global and XFX is more of a niche company producing niche performance parts. Basically Nvidia wouldn't dare **ck around with those three companies, only Nv would suffer.

Sapphire was my brand of choice and still is, though, now with XFX joining ATI, I would like to try them out and get myself a nice XFX based HD 6870 card. I bet there's at least 100X more XFX fans on ATI's side than there ever was for NVIDIA. And I am sure many ATI fans were waiting for the moment when XFX joined the Red Team. NVIDIA's loss!!!! NVIDIA seems to not care about gamers nor it's companies that use NVIDIA GPU's aka BFG....

I have to agree with Robert, XFX decided to go ATi before NVidia decided to not deliver the GF100 cards and rest of the new cards. The problem here is that both NVidia and XFX are taking a gamble here. XFX probably thought NVidia wouldn't exclude them from GF100 as they're one of the better-selling companies among NVidia cards, and NVidia probably thought it wouldn't hurt them so much... well I guess both companies are wrong, but NVidia is suffering the most. Thank god there is POV from the Dutchies which is there to replace XFX cards from NVidia, with their TGT line coming there's no need to desire for XFX 400 series as POV has proven now they can deliver good cards for good prices :)

No, it's different because Intel was not constrained by supply (whether NVIDIA is constrained because of TSMC or because they EOLed GF100 doesn't matter in this case) and most importantly, because NVIDIA is not in a dominant position. They now have less market share than ATI, actually.

I really can't understand Nvidia. MSI, Gigabyte and ASUS always manufactured GeForce and Radeon cards (afaik). XFX began working with Nvidia only... so now that they just began to work with AMD... after being on the green side for so long... they don't deserve to manufacture Fermi cards while MSI, Gigabyte and ASUS do?

Basically this premise is founded on regurgitated media-speak. BFG's woes pre-date Fermi by a year or more http://www.tweaktown.com/news/11205/bfg_a_sinking_ship/index.html As an once-owner of both an OCX and H2OC GTX280, I can assure you that if BFG's QC was of the same standard as their marketing, they would likely still be in the game. Shoddy binning on the bigger OC cards. BTW...If BFG's quality control was up to standard, how did they manage to burn up their RMA stock in three months?

Fair enough. However, isn't this really similar to what Intel is getting sued for right now? Essentially rewarding companies financially for not selling the competition's products? Maybe all those lawyers who were working for AMD to sue Intel could switch over to working for the ATI side of the building. Then again, ATI doesn't seem to need it. nVidia is the company in danger of going down now. No sense beating a dead horse.

That was my point! BFG went under because they didn't have enough GF100s to sell, NVIDIA wouldn't allocate sufficient chips to them. Yet they had no reason to punish BFG since they had been a loyal and exclusive partner. So it wasn't punishment, just insufficient supply. Therefore, I don't think that NVIDIA refused to allocate GF100s to XFX because they were mad at them for selling ATI GPUs, but simply because they didn't have enough, and chose to sell the few chips they had to exclusive partners. The point being that NVIDIA isn't deliberately shooting itself in the foot, just prioritizing.

BFG being loyal to nVidia wasn't what was keeping BFG almost afloat, that was specifically what was killing BFG. Over the last couple generations nVidia misteps have repeatedly been hurting their distributors. Their cards have had increasingly high costs, and decreasing profit margins. nVidia loyalty killed BFG. If XFX had also remained completely loyal to nVidia, they might also be going bankrupt right now.
