Sony was supposed to sell the PS3 under the cost of production, since it's an expensive toy, but to gain profit from licensing its platform tools to devs. Unfortunately, the market was flooded with PSO, PS2 and Xbox'es prior so the interest in PS3 was only to newcomers and actual gamers that wanted to pay that much for something not that valuable as a whole. They also botched it when they dropped their Emotion engine. I was going to get one, but after that announcement I was like meh. PS3 games were expensive and still are while PS2 games are available by the truckload. So, one lost sale for Sony and one added to ATI/AMD, Seagate, Asus... etc. Yeah...

You guys are missing the point, yes the ps3 may be far more powerful than the 360 but it doesnt matter as intiial sales were so weak putting off devs as potential audience was low. You think sony will play the next round with expensive tech? if they do then they really are mad as the wii/360 have totally spanked sony in terms of raw sales and like in any business thats what counts.

wow, mr writer, you are so clever.....not. business doesnt always work this way.the ps3 is ridiculously more powerful than the xbox, the parts are much higher quality, it makes sense that now those valuable components are now cheaper, sony can lower their prices.

Go away Nick, bring back Fuad. How the hell do you expect Sony to give you a blu ray player, IBM Cell processor, custom XDR ram, wifi and a HD for cheaper then an Xbox ? I don't get it did you want Sony to release a shit console like Microsoft's so they could make profits for themselves rather then raise the standard for consumers, and their quality image? Get lost.

Or... you could have been wrong the whole time. Maybe higher volume was not the answer Sony needed back then. Maybe it was only recently that they were able to start building it for substantially less. I'm going to guess that Sony has people to analyze different sales strategies and potential outcomes.
