According to reports, the new Southern Islands GPUs will feature current-generation 5-way VLIW stream processors, but will also contain the next-generation ultra-threading engine, memory controllers, caches and other parts. What we should expect from ATI with the Southern Islands is a substantial boost in performance over Evergreen, something which you would expect from a true next generation design. 8)

Will it crash as badly with grey screens, sucko random game driver crashes, lamer drivers rebroken in "hotfixes", screen spew green, red and white dots, need unlocking in the bloated dot net 2.0 requiring CCC page just to hope to run stable in 2d, will you have to hack some xml file 8 folders deep in some arcane hidden user area so the 2d desktop doesn't crawl or blow or lock ? Maybe the AMD boards should get ready to ban all the dissatisfied posters again. ROFL - oh what a mess it will be. Every red rooster will screed they never had a problem, EVER, but you'll find their name on the net in other places bragging how they finally solved the terrible ati crashing they suffered through. I can hardly wait! GIANT MOUSE CURSOR ! rofl !

Reminds of the piece of news I read somewhere, where Jobs sold his shares for those $10 a piece 8-9 years ago and now analysts were saying he lost the chance of his life to cash in heavy. What a DF!

True, but it's still at $250+... Some 8-9 years ago it traded at around 10 bucks, so I wouldn't mind. :-)

this looks like it will happen, by the time nvidia gets their new chips across all market segments we will be seeing radeon 6000 and price cuts on radeon 5000. It's a horrible situation for nvidia unless they pop out those cards one after another

Just to spare Fudzilla the effort of having to write up another article over supposed code names, the other ones are Antilles, the high end dual GPU card, and Barts, which should replace the HD 5770. See this image: http://www.4gamer.net/games/110/G011065/20100526093/TN/002.jpg Faud, you're welcome.

Frankly I am still using my slightly OCed 4870 to this day and very well on a 22-inch screen. I can't begin to justify buying a new card just to gain an extra level of AA or whatnot.

I think they'll split processes. Probably the low to mid end cards, 64xx to 67xx will be in the Southern Islands group - half Evergreen and half Northern Islands more like guinea-pigs for final NI, on TSMC's 40nm process and later on in 2011 we'll be seeing 68xx and 69xx as part of Northern Islands group using GloFo's 32 nm bulk HKMG process (which I prefer over > ) if TSMC can't get its act together, in time.
