This is one of those "in theory only" problems: " However, the HD 5830 ships with 1GB of memory and it features a 256-bit bus, so it has a bit of an advantage over Nvidia’s 192-bit card. " Unfortunately, the 768 gtx460 stomps the crap out of the 5830 nine tines out of ten. Does 5830 get even a single win ? Now the benchmarks are out, the $199 460 whips the tar out of the crappy in comparison 5830, that even the red rooster fanboys used to bash... ( Now they've reversed their hatred in hopes that they can convince someone, anyone, that it competes with GTX460) No the 460 is smashing down the 5850 (that had low sales anyway), crushing the 5830, and pretty much leaves just the 5770 for the red roosters, to save a few bucks.

My entire system is AMD… 790FX MB, Phenom II 955 X4, ATI 5870, and while I believe AMD won the graphics war this cycle, with a better product “Evergreen” in price, performance and efficiency, it’s my “opinion” the 5XXX cards are all overpriced. I purchased my 5870 at the $424.00 price point some months ago, and that was approximately $100 to dam much. It’s not worth that price even if it’s better than the baconator from NVidia.

It's still a solid $400 on Newegg on most brands. For a graphic card the HD5870 have been holding strong at that price point. Oh the good old days where they drop like $100 3 months later after release and another $50 after that. Yea, I'm that sucker that bought the HD2900 when it first release.

As flip-mode has stated (at least here in the US), the 5830 has been available for $200 and the 5850 for $300 for quite some time before the release of the GTX 460. Maybe more vendors are lowering to these prices but the minimum prices haven't changed.

As mentioned by Flip-Mode the HD5830 has been available for $199 for a very long time now, the only thing that has changed is it's now more vendors at more e-tailers. Price cuts are sure to come, but why bother in the first week when the ecosphere is full of hype. However if the HD5850 pricing changes, expect GTX470 pricing to be dragged down with it and the GTX480 due to it's poor value due to two GTX460 in SLi, and that will pull the HD5870/5970 down too. That's what happens when you inject competent new cards into the pricing grid. And it's not the GTX460-768 that matters @ $199, like the HD5830 it's a card for chumps, the GTX460-1GB is the compelling card after initial pent-up fanboi demand when sane consumers are buying.

Well, I think the idea here is future-proofing. While the GTX 460 definitely offers very good value now, the 768MB version might end up limited by its memory in a few months, especially if you play in 1920 × 1080 or 1200 with anti-aliasing. In fact, in some games (e.g. Metro 2033) it already is.

This article is out of touch with reality. 5830 has been available for $199 or less for a bit now. There's a XFX 5850 that has been available at newegg in the US for $289 for a while now. And it's a fallacy to say that prices of cards should be set relative to how their specs compare - what difference does that make? It's all about how they perform. The 460 is a stronger card than the 5830, regardless of any paper advantage the 5830 can claim.
