Sorry for real late reply, but perhaps you'll read it. Fortune 500 company you're working for probably has some legacy software not working correctly with SP3 (like services that need IE6). So it's easier for them to send a memo that SP3 "sucks" than fix/upgrade their own legacy software. And if they don't fix their legacy apps, and you upgrade to SP3, their legacy app brakes, and tech support gets a million calls with same problem.. So on their end, SP3 sucks. But it's actually a development department and IT administration of that company that sucks. There is no other reason not to go to SP3. I know it, I'm both IT admin and tech support in my company (small one), and I blame internal developers for apps braking, not Windows OS. They should do it right, and not point at others.

:) Thanks for your concern, but here’s the problem. The Fortune 500 Company I work for sent out a memo advising all employees to "not" install XP SP3, tech support says it sucks. I don't expect MS to update every aspect of XP forever, but I feel if some hacker finds a big freakin backdoor into the OS, MS should fix those security issues.... that’s all I'm asking

They are not dropping security support for Windows XP. They are dropping security support for those that use SP2. If you are that security conscious, you'd be on SP3. And SP3 has support till 2014.

@ Greg4422 There are plenty of people still using 16 bit apps that they are too cheap or stubborn to replace and look what that's done for ALL Windows users. A gaping security hole that can only properly be plugged by totally disabling 16 bit app support. Again. The single biggest security problem with EVERY Windows OS to date has been backwards compatibility. Period. Well, Microsoft has finally "Gotten it". They're slowly changing this practice. It's about time. Expecting support forever, no matter what the cost, is unrealistic and MS moving people along is not a violation of that "Good faith".

I disagree with most of the post here. Just when we thought Microsoft finally "got it" and was making amends for that monstrosity “Vista,” They pull this BS to try and force consumers to move to Windows 7. Even with the moderate success of windows 7, it’s not perfect and I can point to several problems…one being the stupid “auto arrange” files and folders. Any who, Windows XP is still the most used Operating System in the World…and you’re just going to drop security support to millions of customers that brought your product in “good faith.”? Do the right thing here Microsoft, stop being a PITA. Support the security update for XP and allow people to migrate to windows 7 at their leisure, not with you twisting their arm.

I agree with nECro .. it's been a lengthy support cycle. I know that companies rely on ancient software because it's compatible with their other ancient software and so on.. but it has to end somewhere. When you buy most things, importer/manufacturer usually has a clause where they promise repair and parts for a certain period in time. But I still haven't seen anyone supporting anything for 15 years for free - except for Microsoft software (and Team17's Worms serial :) ). SP3 is still support, they aren't "left in cold"..
