The best Celerons ever were the first-gen A series, Mendocino core if my memory serves me right... You could clock them from 300MHz to 450MHz just by pushing the FSB up to 100MHz. I totally agree with Pogsnet - anyone looking for a cheap rig should go AMD. They've got better chipsets with better IGPs and they just offer better value for money. Also, a lot of people have old DDR2 laying around, and it's still a pretty good choice for AMD-based systems as they don't experience the same performance boost with DDR3 like Intel.

The Celeron 430 1.8GHz is probably one of my favorite chips of all time. I had that thing clocked at 3.33GHz on stock cooling and it was nearly the equivalent of an Athlon FX-57 at 3.16GHz ;-) It's been a great adventure Celeron. May you rest in peace.

They have to go since you can choose between Corei3-7 or Core2Dud - Pentium and if you want more slower you can have the Atom. So you don't really need another more slower processor name. It is just a name anyway. If I built a cheaper rig, I go for AMD which is faster than that puny Celeron.

Wow! This is really sad news. I build around a dozen or so PCs per year for family, friends, relo's, work colegues etc, and over the years I've built some OUTSTANDING Celeron machines. For a basic user who just wants to surf the web, play music, copy a DVD, run MS Office - the Celeron has been an amazing CPU. I swear - some of the Celeron machines I have built with minor overclocks, appear to have boot times and snappiness quicker than dual or quad core machines at times. I`m really going to miss those little critters.

I agree, it makes no sense, but I guess it's better for marketing - i.e. putting a "dual-core" sticker on a pathetically underpowered notebook. Also, at $86 it's overpriced.

How can it be "replaced" by Atom? I mean , they have 2 completely different segments in the market. It's like replacing a city car with a moped and say it's fine.
