The 5500's are very crippled cards. A Radeon 4850 has more than double the processing power of a 5500 card or a 4670. New drivers won't make a low to mid-range card into a gaming card. The 4850 is already a gaming card.

Well, I just bought a Powercolor ax5770 to replace my BSOD hd5870 and oh boy did I'm surprise. It can run BF:BC2 @ 2048x1152 16xaf 2xaa at a smooth framerate, not great but smooth. I don't think hd5500 quite capable enough to do beyond 1080p gaming. With GDDR5, it's more capable than GT240.

I'd not recommend buying a 4850 because it consumes a lot more power and is a lot hotter than similar 5000 series cards. In addition, finding a brand new 4850 is quite difficult. The 5670 is a bit slower but a lot cooler and needs no adittional power connector. In addition, the 5000 series are gaining and will continue to gain additional performance from new drivers.

I've always thought the best thing to do with memory and low end graphics card is to provide the most energy efficient memory of the GDDR family (GDDR5) and simply place one or two memory chips on the card depending on whether they be low end or mainstream cards, this way the high speeds GDDR5 provides is balanced out by the low amount of data lanes from the GPU to the memory (more memory chips on a card means more memory bandwidth) the low end GPUs don't need high amount of memory or memory bandwidth for what they're designed for (Blurays, HD content, aero effects etc), I like to see the industry moving away from using old tech and making the newest the standards for all products
